What I Stand For and Why I'm Running

1. My name is James Freeman. I’m running for Levy County Commissioner for District 1. Having several small businesses, I know what it is to work hard for a living and persevere in these challenging times. I have a bachelor of fine art degree from the Savannah College of Art & Design and I am an established American painter. I also specialize in farming over 50 species of endangered cacti and work to assist botanists in their conservation. I share my expertise with organizations through regular lectures. Additionally, I am a professional bagpiper providing joy to newlyweds and comfort to those who have lost loved ones.

2. I am opposed to the approved sand mine special exception that was railroaded over the property rights of the citizens of Levy County, and without regard for citizen and expert input, which was heavily restricted. It was clearly illegal in so many ways.

3. Let’s keep Levy County rural! I am for preserving ranch and farm land from unregulated growth and development. I am staunchly against a new toll road through Levy County. We welcome progress but with wise oversight and vision.

4. I believe in preserving Florida’s natural heritage in the form of green spaces, wilderness corridors, protected watersheds, drinking water and our slice of the Nature Coast and coastal waters. As is often said, “They aren’t making anymore Florida”.

5. I believe in upholding ethical standards, restoring trust in government from the local level on up to the federal level. Grassroots change from the ground up is how it happens.

6. I believe that in order to be an effective county commissioner, one must be informed and engaged. I will educate myself completely on every issue for the benefit of my constituents, whether you live in Bronson, Cedar Key, Chiefland, Fanning Springs, Inglis, Otter Creek, Williston or Yankeetown.

This race for District 1 is between three Republicans which means Democrats, Independents and Republicans CAN ALL VOTE in the primary. As the primary will decide the winner, it will be over with the primary. And, even if you don't live in District 1 you can still vote in that election because Levy County is an "ALL IN" county for Districts 1-5.

Being an environmentalist, I am experimenting this coming week with up-cycled old signs that I'll prime, spray-stencil in layers and deploy. If this works well, I will try to find out where old plastic step-stand signs go to be recycled. If you would like a sign to put up, please let me know and I'll get one to you either way - up-cycled or new. I am ordering bumper stickers and 4x6 postcards to distribute as well.
